my best friend recently told me she wants to get into fitness. again.
she’s tried before, more than once, and the story is always pretty much the same. she downloads a workout plan, buys groceries for an entirely new diet, promises herself she’ll start waking up earlier to train, and goes all in. then, a few weeks later, everything slowly falls apart.
when i ask her why she stopped, her answer usually comes down to one thing: she wasn’t seeing results. nothing seemed to be changing, either in her body or in the gym, and eventually, all that effort started to feel pointless.
but when i look at her experience, i see something else. i see someone trying to change almost every aspect of her life at once, without building the foundations that make those changes sustainable. i also see a beginner who hasn’t yet learned how progress actually works in fitness. without that knowledge, it’s hard to know whether you’re on the right track, especially when the first few weeks don’t come with any visible changes. and when you don’t know what to expect, it’s incredibly easy to mistake a perfectly normal beginning for failure.
if you’re in a similar place right now, consider this the 12-month plan i’d put together for you if you were my bestie and just wanted someone to make the whole fitness thing feel a little less overwhelming.
so here’s the plan: twelve months, split into four phases of three months each, every phase with one main focus and a way to see that things are working long before the mirror shows anything. think of each phase as a direction, not a deadline. if you need five months to get through the first one, you take five months. there’s no test to pass, no finish line to cross, and absolutely no reason to rush.
now, twelve months of advice is a lot to fit into one email (and probably a lot to take in at once), so i decided to split this roadmap into two parts:
part 1 covers months 1 to 6 and is about the things you do: building a routine you can repeat and learning how to make progress.
part 2 covers months 7 to 12 and is about the things you decide: adjusting your training on your own and making it all last beyond the year.
each phase ends with a checkpoint to help you reflect on where you are, what’s working, and whether you’re ready to move on.

here’s what we’re going to cover in part 1:
months 1 to 3:
building a routine around your real schedule,
a template for two full-body workouts (including exercises, sets, and reps),
eating well without dieting,
and building small habits outside the gym.
months 4 to 6:
tracking your lifts,
understanding how hard your sets should feel,
adding structure to your meals,
and staying consistent through busy weeks and vacations.
