I just finished a slow, reasonable couple months of cutting so I could show off all the muscle I spent the winter building and all of this is so true! it’s so much easier now that I have a solid amount of muscle mass and a very healthy relationship with my body and my weight, but the cost is real too. (did help my running though!)
can’t agree more, kathleen. i feel it’s easier now that i have more muscle because i don’t need to go as low in calories to see results. also, my relationship with food is so much better now than it was a few years ago. i’m glad the article resonated with you.
This is such a great, informative post that I wish more people talked about! I struggled in my past attempting weight loss for all the wrong reasons. Tried it again this year for the right reasons and (not so) ironically have had the most success and confidence in the progress.
thanks for reading, marisa 💖 and i’m happy it helped. i wish more people in the fitness space talked about that too. it’s a subject with a lot of nuance, and most of the time, it’s either all about losing fat whatever it takes or not being allowed to talk about it at all.
This is excellent food for thought (pun absolutely intended) while I am working with a dietitian to help me learn how to better give my body what it needs. I resisted thinking about losing weight for so long due to the prescribed paths 1 and 2 you mention, but if I’m being honest with myself I don’t love the way my body looks right now. Thanks for sharing your experience and for the reminder of the agency we have to make informed decisions!
i feel you, because for a long time i felt like it was "wrong" to want to lose fat, especially because from the outside, people would probably say i'm already a small woman. but at the end of the day, i'm the one living in this body, so i think it's fair that the decision to make changes or not is mine.
